Madonna & Child OR Re-parenting my Inner Child. SERIES 1. 2005, 24"w x 20"h, giclée print on acid-free watercolor paper, edition of 25.
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
This series of prints was created because of my interest in old masters' paintings featuring the theme of Madonna & Child, including artists Albrecht Durer, Jan van Eyck, Botticelli, Raphael, Fra Filippo Lippi, Parmigianino, and Hans Memling.
I incorporated my deep connection to (and on-going process of) re-parenting my own "Inner Child”.
These are self-portraits. I am both the MOTHER and the CHILD. I found the connection fascinating and explored it on many levels:
-There is the eternal connection of myself and art, to the artists that have come before me, the great masters who have left there historic mark.
-This ageless motif of Mother and Child, Mary and Christ is a recurring element in a my artistic work.
-Also there is always this religious theme in my work, going back to my very strict roman catholic upbringing.
My images are both playful and disarming: I include my rebel (demonic) inner child, who screams out to be heard, to be seen, to be recognized and appreciated... and to be loved.
i am in the process of healing my own inner child, from the damage done by my own parents who did their best but somehow their nurturing of this fragile, delicate flower was not enough. I don't want to blame them but they just didn't know what to do with me... weren't equipped, didn't have the tools.
